Mummy baked brie with fig & honey

Mummy baked brie with fig & honey

Halloween food has a tendency to fall into one of two categories: genuinely delicious or something you make entirely because it looks like a severed finger.

We're choosing delicious.

This Mummy Baked Brie has everything we want in a Halloween appetizer—warm, melty cheese, sweet fig preserves, flaky golden puff pastry, and just enough spooky decoration to make it fun.

Even better? It looks considerably more impressive than the amount of effort required to make it.

Ingredients

  • 1 wheel of brie, about 8 ounces
  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 2–3 tablespoons fig preserves
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 2 candy eyes, olives, or edible eyeballs
  • Honey, for drizzling
  • Fresh rosemary, optional for garnish

For serving:

  • Sliced apples
  • Sliced pears
  • Crackers
  • Toasted pecans, optional

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven.
Preheat your oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Prepare the puff pastry.
Unfold the thawed puff pastry on a lightly floured surface. Place the brie in the center to judge the size you'll need.

Cut enough pastry to wrap around the wheel of brie, then cut the remaining pastry into thin strips about ½ inch wide. These will become your mummy bandages.

3. Add the fig preserves.
Place the brie in the center of the pastry and spoon the fig preserves over the top.

Fold the pastry around the brie, trimming away any excessive overlap, and gently press the seams together to seal.

4. Wrap your mummy.
Arrange the thin strips of puff pastry across the top in different directions to create the look of mummy bandages.

Don't worry about making them perfect. This is one of those rare recipes where slightly messy actually makes it better.

Leave a small opening near the top where you'll add the eyes after baking.

5. Add the egg wash.
Whisk together the egg and one tablespoon of water. Lightly brush the pastry with the egg wash to help it turn golden and glossy in the oven.

6. Bake.
Bake for approximately 20–25 minutes, or until the puff pastry is puffed and golden brown.

Let the brie rest for about 5–10 minutes before serving. This gives the cheese a moment to settle so it doesn't completely escape the second you cut into it.

7. Bring your mummy to life.
Add two edible candy eyes between the pastry strips.

Finish with a drizzle of honey and a little fresh rosemary around the platter if you'd like.

What to serve with mummy baked brie

The sweet-and-savory combination works with plenty of dippers, so build the platter around whatever you like.

We love it with crisp apple and pear slices, buttery crackers, toasted pecans, and extra fig preserves.

You could also add grapes, dried fruit, sliced baguette, or even a little prosciutto if you're turning it into a larger appetizer spread.

Make it your own

Don't love fig preserves? No problem.

Try raspberry preserves, cranberry sauce, apricot preserves, apple butter, or hot honey instead.

You can also sprinkle chopped pecans or walnuts over the preserves before wrapping the brie if you want a little crunch.

A Halloween appetizer worth eating

The best party recipes are the ones that look like you worked much harder than you actually did, and this one absolutely qualifies.

It's festive enough for Halloween, easy enough to throw together before guests arrive, and underneath all those mummy bandages is still warm baked brie wrapped in buttery puff pastry.

Which means the chances of leftovers are approximately zero.

Happy haunting—and happy snacking! 👻
