October in North Texas is when we can finally start believing cooler weather might actually happen. Maybe. Eventually. 😂
Before the first real cold front arrives, this is a great month to take care of a few seasonal maintenance projects around the house. A little preparation now can help prevent inconvenient—and potentially expensive—problems later.
1. Inspect and clean your fireplace
If your fireplace has been sitting untouched since last winter, give it some attention before that first chilly night when everyone suddenly decides it's fireplace weather.
For wood-burning fireplaces, clear away old ash and visually inspect the firebox, damper, and chimney for buildup, damage, or anything that doesn't look right. Chimneys should be professionally inspected and cleaned as needed, particularly if the fireplace is used regularly.
For gas fireplaces, check that everything appears clean and in good condition before use. If you notice unusual odors, soot, ignition problems, or anything else concerning, have it serviced by a professional rather than trying to troubleshoot gas components yourself.
2. Disconnect and store garden hoses
Freezing temperatures may feel very far away right now, but Texas weather has a habit of changing its mind quickly.
Once you're finished regularly using your garden hoses, disconnect them from outdoor faucets, drain them completely, and store them somewhere protected. Leaving a hose attached can trap water inside the faucet and plumbing, increasing the risk of damage when temperatures eventually drop below freezing.
While you're there, take a quick look at your outdoor faucets for leaks or damage. You'll be glad you handled it before the first freeze warning sends everyone in North Texas scrambling for faucet covers at the same time.
3. Check outdoor lighting
The days are getting shorter, which means your exterior lighting is about to work a little harder.
Walk around your property after dark and check porch lights, pathway lighting, motion sensors, landscape lights, and fixtures near entrances. Replace burned-out bulbs, clean dirty fixtures, and make sure motion-activated lights are working properly.
Good exterior lighting isn't just about curb appeal—it makes walkways safer and helps improve visibility around your home as daylight hours decrease.
4. Clean refrigerator coils
Here's one that's very easy to forget because we rarely see the part that needs cleaning.
Depending on your refrigerator, the condenser coils may be located underneath or behind the appliance. Dust, pet hair, and debris can collect around them over time, making your refrigerator work harder than necessary.
Check your manufacturer's instructions for the location and recommended cleaning method for your model. Once the appliance is safely powered off as directed, a coil brush or vacuum can usually handle the buildup.
And if you have pets? Prepare yourself. There's a good chance you're about to discover where approximately half of their missing hair has been living. 😂
5. Inspect your attic for pests
As temperatures begin to cool, rodents and other pests start looking for warmer places to spend their time—and your attic can look like prime real estate.
Take a quick look for droppings, nesting material, chewed wiring or insulation, unusual odors, or evidence that something has found its way inside. From the exterior, look for damaged vents, gaps, or other potential entry points.
If you find signs of an infestation, consider calling a pest-control professional rather than simply sealing the opening. You definitely don't want to discover you've locked your unexpected houseguest inside.
A little fall prep goes a long way
October is one of those perfect transition months for home maintenance. You're past the worst of the summer heat, but there's still time to take care of outdoor projects and prepare your home before winter weather arrives.
